How was your first Sauna Session? Are you starting to feel the lightness in your body? Can you feel your skin glowing and the warmth and redness of your skin? Can you feel your muscles are more relaxed than before you came in?
Perhaps later you might feel quite tired, bleary-eyed and feel like having a nap. That’s okay. It’s natural to feel this way after a sauna. We suggest that you don’t fight it and listen to your body.
Here are a couple of other ways you could support your detoxification process after a Sauna Session:
Have Another One!
A single sauna session will start the process of detoxification but years of accumulating toxins through the air we breathe, the food we eat and the by-products of our metabolism could not be eliminated in that one session; no matter how long you were in there. You need to have a few sessions in quick succession to really get the process of detoxification moving forward and eliminate the harmful effects of toxins.
For general detoxification and weight loss, we suggest to begin with 2-3 visits per week for 3-4 weeks. This will create momentum and help continue the process of replenishment to the skin and circulation to really draw out the toxins more efficiently.
Once this is achieved, as a means of maintaining the changes you’ve made, you could reduce it to once a week or fortnightly. This frequency is dependent on a few factors, including:
- how much toxins you accumulate through your diet,
- the stresses in your job or your lifestyle,
- how much rest you have on average,
- how much water you have, etc.
If you wish to take on a regular schedule we suggest purchasing one of our 12-visit bundles for significant savings on your sauna sessions. Enquire at the Front Desk for our Sauna Prepaid Bundles.
If you haven’t tried it already, try one of the other Sauna durations (we have 30, 45 and 60 minute sessions) to see which sessions work best for you.
Drink More Water
All that sweating will leave your body dehydrated. Flush out more of the toxins and rehydrate yourself from your session by having lots of water afterwards. We suggest to drink a litre of water and avoid alcohol, coffee or black tea after your session. Remember, the recommended daily water intake is 2.3 litres for women and 3.0 litres for men!
Get Some Sleep
It’s very common to be sleepy after an infrared sauna session. After all, your body’s been working to maintain your core temperature, which can be tiring.
Tucking in for an early night after your first session and get at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
If you’re sleepy after your session, don’t fight the feeling and have a nap. Your body will thank you for it.
Don’t Shower…Yet!
Your metabolism is going to be higher than normal because your body has been trying to keep itself cool in the sauna. That means you’re burning more calories than normal. We suggest that you try to keep it that way as long as possible so that you keep burning more calories well after your sauna session is over. Jumping into a shower immediately after will slow down your metabolism back to normal and you don’t want that…unless you have a meeting afterwards. You’ll want to be fresh for that.
We suggest that you shower one hour after your session to get the maximum metabolic benefit.
PS. You might also notice that you’re odourless after your session. That’s right! The sweating is different during an infrared sauna session.
Foam Roll
Heating up the body promotes better circulation, relaxes your muscles and frees up a lot of metabolic waste within the muscles. We suggest using a foam roller to roll out and assist the elimination of these toxic by-products out of your system and further release the tension build-up in your muscles. It’s like giving yourself a trigger-point massage where you control how much pressure you can tolerate.
We have 40cm foam rollers for $50 to help you get started. And we can teach you some basic rolling exercises to get you started.
Watch Your Carbs
Carbohydrates are basic units of energy for the body. Simple carbohydrates, like sugar, can be broken down quickly for immediate supply of energy. But if there’s an excess supply without exercise, the carbohydrates will be converted to glycogen and sent to your muscles for later use. Glycogen is a converted version of carbohydrates that, if not utilised, will be transported back to the liver to be converted into fat.
If you’re trying to lose weight through the infra-red sauna, reducing your intake of carbohydrates will assist in getting to your goal weight. Carbohydrate-rich food sources include: bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. Also, minimise on using sugar to sweeten foods as sugar contributes to the carbohydrate load.
Green Up!
Eating more vegetables introduces antioxidants into your body, enhancing detoxification from the inside. It is said that every colour and hue represented in your diet represents different antioxidants with different benefits. Having green, leafy vegetables will help in getting the antioxidants you need to ensure proper detoxification of your liver.
Try putting celery, carrots, ginger and coconut water in a NutriBullet to make a smoothie that packs a punch in antioxidants!
Move smarter
Although you’ve just burnt up 300 calories in your 30-minute sauna session, getting healthy involves regular exercise. 30-minutes a day is all it takes to get your adequate amount of exercise. This can be done by walking, jogging, swimming.
Take your kids or your pets for a walk today and share the benefits of exercise.
ReConnect Your Brain-Body Wiring
Your nervous system maintains and regulates body functions better as long as there is no interference. Getting your spine checked for spinal subluxations, which interferes with your body’s communication lines, and having them cleared through spinal adjustments will ensure that your body is well connected to the central control of the body: your brain.
Our office offers a FREE Spinal and Postural Check with one of our Chiropractors. Just take the voucher below to the front desk and they will be more than happy to arrange a check on your next visit or a time that’s convenient for you.
